Saving for a Down Payment

June 22, 2011 By admin Leave a Comment

A down payment can range from that which is the minimum requested of the lender, to a powerful way to reduce monthly payments. You’ll, of course, need them on items such as homes and cars. As with any major purchase, you should take the down payment into account.

Be sure to create a budget, if you do not have one already. You’ll certainly want to plan the purchase, along with the down payment, in conjunction with your budget. For instance, perhaps you could allocate an amount for the down payment and the purchase, in a separate savings account.

Calculate the down payment on a home, or appropriate item. Financial calculators can give you a fairly accurate idea of typical down payments, depending on the price of the home or car, within typical standards. Use this with your budget: for instance, if your expected payment is $300 on a new car and you want it lowered, figure out the possible down payment to reach that goal – and then plan for it in your budget.

You should also look towards your finances after all of this occurs. For instance, if you purchase the car and take on a new payment, what happens if you meet unexpected expenses? Look at a possible emergency fund, or note a good company that handles a paycheck advance. You never know what might happen, and these are good resources to have.

A down payment is something that should involve a high degree of planning. With your budget, you can make the purchase cater to your needs with the down payment. Don’t underestimate how important the down payment is in the purchase.
